PACKING LIST

Recommended Packing List for South African programs

Your list may vary a bit depending on the venues chosen for your program and the season (winter vs. summer). Note that we try to have laundry done at least once during a two-week program, and that there is usually a grocery store that we can usually stop at on the way to camp on the first day if you have forgotten something (approximately 1-2 hours from most of  our venues).

• Walking shoes / Hiking boots (closed toe)
• Sandals for around the camp (flip flops and/or slippers)
• Neutral coloured clothing (khaki, green, brown) – not white or bright colors – layers are best: 2 pairs short pants, 2 pairs long pants, 2 short sleeved shirts, 2 long sleeved shirts, socks & undergarments for a week, an outer layer or windbreaker.
• Warm jacket for night drives for winter weather (May – Aug)
• Gloves, beanies, scarves, fleeces – it gets cold in the early morning and night, especially if we are driving around on an open vehicle
• Sun hat and sun cream
• Swimming costume (bathing suit) for warmer weather (venue permitting) – mid-days can get hot, even in winter
• Raincoat / Poncho
• Toiletries – soap, toothpaste, etc.
• A towel for drying off after showering/swimming
• Torch (flashlight)– very important – a head torch (head lamp) as well as a normal hand-held torch is recommended
• Extra batteries for torches, cameras, etc.
• Water bottles (at least 1 liter bottles)
• Day pack – rucksack
• Camera, memory cards, charging cables and adaptors (see adaptor photo below)
• Pocket knife (if you have one), but please put this in your checked luggage and not in your carry on or on your person for your flights
• Notebooks and pens/pencils
• Binoculars
• Any personal medication that you need
• Any luxuries that you would require – chocolates, sweets, etc.
• A little bit of pocket money (not much, as there are not a lot of opportunities for shopping, there are ATMs available in most towns, and most shops accept credit cards)
